How the Shopify theme detector works
Every Shopify storefront declares its active theme in the page source, in a small Shopify.theme object. The detector loads the store's public homepage, reads that object and shows you:
- Theme name: the name the merchant gave the theme. It's often renamed, for example “Dawn – Black Friday”.
- Original theme: the Theme Store theme it was built from (Dawn, Prestige, Impulse…), even if renamed.
- Version: the theme version, useful to know whether the store is on a recent release.
- Theme Store ID: present when the theme comes from the official Shopify Theme Store. It's empty for custom-built themes.
Nothing is installed and nothing is stored. The tool reads the same public HTML your browser receives.
Find a Shopify theme manually
- Open the store and view the page source (Ctrl+U on Windows, Cmd+Option+U on Mac).
- Search (Ctrl+F) for
Shopify.theme. - Read
schema_name(the original theme) andname(the merchant's name for it).
If schema_name is empty and there is no theme_store_id, the store runs a custom or heavily modified theme. To find similar designs, browse the Shopify Theme Store by the features you liked.

How do I find out what Shopify theme a store is using?

Why does the detector show a theme name I can't find in the Theme Store?
Merchants can rename themes. Look at the original theme field: that's the Theme Store theme it came from. If it's empty, the theme is custom-built.
Can it detect themes on password-protected or bot-protected stores?
No. If the store requires a password or shows an anti-bot challenge, the detector stops and tells you instead of trying to bypass it.
